Sacred Symbols: Serpents

AKA:  "Sacred Serpents"

See also my other page: 'Sacred Trees'

I have decided to place the follow picture at the top of this page, because it encapsulates the whole theme of this page: sacred serpents.

Painting: "Nagas" by Elli Crocker

(Thanks Elli, for doing this painting.  It is truly marvelous!)

Prologue:

Most of us native English-speakers are at least somewhat familiar (if not very familiar) with the serpent/dragons in the Judaeo-Christian Bible (What I shall call, "the JCB".

"But, there is only 1 serpent-dragon mentioned in the JCB," you say.

"Wrong!  There were three."  See:

1.  LUCIFER:  Lucifer is the name of the SERPENT in the Garden-of-Eden Allegory.  However, Lucifer was not really a serpent, but rather one of the Elohim-Gods, who was symbolized as a serpent.  Why was the serpent symbol chosen?  Some scholars have speculated that, in the case of LUCIFER, the serpent represented knowledge.  I disagree.  I shall NOT tell you now what the LUCIFER serpent actually represented... not at this point.  The answer will be somewhere near the bottom of this page.

[Parenthetically, I think it is important to acknowledge the facts:  (1) the early church leaders, especially after it became a state religion under the rule of Constantine, changed a lot of things in the Bible, to suit their own ends; (2) Then, the church leaders declared the so-called 'word of God' infallible... the Holy Bible being the so-called 'word of God'.  Yeah, right.  That's like me declaring that I am a prophet of God, and you cannot dispute that I am a prophet of God, because whatever I say is true.  So, if I am a prophet of God, because I say I am, and a prophet would not lie, then I must actually be a prophet of God.]

The name 'Lucifer" literally means: light bearer.  Light has always, even today, been a metaphor for knowledge.  When we read the Adam-and-Eve Allegory with knowledge in mind, we may see Lucifer in a different light.  I know I have.

What did Lucifer do that was so bad?  He elucidated (i.e., enlightened) Eve about the functions of the tree of life (male body) and the tree of knowledge of good and evil (female body).  Had he not done so,  it is conceivable that Adam and Eve would still be in the Garden of Eden, living in paradisiacal bliss, childless.  That's right....  childless.

Why is it, then, that the Gods (i.e., Elohim, which is plural), did not want Adam and Eve to know about their own bodies?  What is the deal?  What's up with that?  If you are a Christian, you must have come up with some justification for this conundrum.  The Mormons have the perfect answer for this.  The Jehovah's Witnesses (J.W.s) criticize Adam and Eve for their decision to disobey the Gods and procreate.  I say, that they are ludicrous!  Had Adam and Eve NOT disobeyed the Gods, we would not be here;  But, that is assuming one wishes to take the whole Adam and Eve thing literally.

The MORMON doctrine, J.W. doctrine, and the doctrines of all Christendom are completely ludicrous, because they take literally what was meant as an allegory.

The bottom line is that the Lucifer-serpent symbol is understandable.  All one needs to do is seek, and he/she shall find.

2.  BEHEMOTH:  While some scholars (or I should write "most scholars") seem to think that Behemoth was/is a hippopotamus, I vehemently disagree.  The description of the beast in JOB, does not match that of a hippopotami at all!  And, while I admit that snakes do not eat grass, I am inclined to believe that the symbolism was that of a serpent.

3.  LEVIATHAN:  It is commonly agreed by all that Leviathan was a sea-dwelling serpent or dragon (as it is clearly stated so in the JCB).  Isaiah equates Leviathan with the Devil, but by the time Isaiah was born the true meaning of Behemoth and Leviathan may have been lost.

Behemoth and Leviathan:  in Scripture

Canonical Literature
Job/Isaiah
Apocryphal Literature
Book of Enoch

Behemoth has the following characteristics:

1. Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. (Job 40:16)
2. He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens. The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. (Job 40:21-22)
3. Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth. (Job 40:23)

Leviathan has the following characteristics:

1.  His scales are his pride. (Job 41:15)
2.  Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. (Job 41:19)
3.  In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea. (Isaiah 27:1)

Book of Noah
Chapter LX. of Book of Enoch

"7. And on that day were two monsters parted, a female monster named Leviathan, to dwell in the abysses of the ocean over the fountains of the waters. 8. But the male is named Behemoth, who occupied with his breast a waste wilderness named †Dűidâin†, on the east of the garden where the elect and righteous dwell, where my grandfather was taken up, the seventh from Adam, the first man whom the Lord of Spirits created. 9. And I besought the other angel that he should show me the might of those monsters, how they were parted on one day and cast, the one into the abysses of the sea, and the other unto the dry land of the wilderness. 10. And he said to me: 'Thou son of man, herein thou dost seek to know what is hidden.'"

Article:  "The Cosmic Serpent"

The following excerpt from J. Narby's book, "The Cosmic Serpent" is one of the most enlightening things I [Leon] have ever read.
The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge

by Jeremy Narby

My research revealed that in the early 1960s, anthropologist Michael Harner had gone to the Peruvian Amazon to study the culture of the Conibo Indians. After a year or so he had made little headway in understanding their religious system when the Conibo told him that if he really wanted to learn, he had to drink ayahuasca. Harner accepted, not without fear, because the people had warned him that the experience was terrifying. The following evening, under the strict supervision of his indigenous friends, he drank the equivalent of a third of a bottle. After several minutes he found himself falling into a world of true hallucinations.

He saw that his visions emanated from "giant reptilian creatures" resting at the lowest depths of his brain. These creatures began projecting scenes in front of his eyes. "First they showed me the planet Earth as it was eons ago, before there was any life on it. I saw an ocean, barren land, and a bright blue sky. Then black specks dropped from the sky by the hundreds and landed in front of me on the barren landscape. I could see the ‘specks’ were actually large, shiny, black creatures with stubby pterodactyl-like wings and huge whale-like bodies.... They explained to me in a kind of thought language that they were fleeing from something out in space. They had come to the planet Earth to escape their enemy. The creatures then showed me how they had created life on the planet in order to hide within the multitudinous forms and thus disguise their presence. Before me, the magnificence of plant and animal creation and speciation–hundreds of millions of years of activity–took place on a scale and with a vividness impossible to describe. I learned that the dragon-like creatures were thus inside all forms of life, including man."

At this point in his account, Harner writes in a footnote at the bottom of the page: "In retrospect one could say they were almost like DNA, although at that time, 1961, I knew nothing of DNA."

I had not paid attention to this footnote previously. There was indeed DNA inside the human brain, as well as in the outside world of plants, given that the molecule of life containing genetic information is the same for all species. DNA could thus be considered a source of information that is both external and internal–in other words, precisely what I had been trying to imagine.

I plunged back into Harner’s book, but found no further mention of DNA. However, a few pages on, Harner notes that "dragon" and "serpent" are synonymous. This made me think that the double helix of DNA resembled, in its form, two entwined serpents.

To find out, I picked up a book about a third ayahuasca-using people, entitled (in French) _Vision, Knowledge, Power: Shamanism Among the Yagua in the North-East of Peru_. In this study by Jean-Pierre Chaumeil (to my mind, one of the most rigorous on the subject), I found a "celestial serpent" in a drawing of the universe by a Yagua shaman. Then, a few pages away, another shaman is quoted as saying: "At the very beginning, before the birth of the earth, this earth here, our most distant ancestors lived on another earth...." Chaumeil adds that the Yagua consider that all living beings were created by twins, who are "the two central characters in Yagua cosmogonic thought."

These correspondences seemed very strange, and I did not know what to make of them. Or rather, I could see an easy way of interpreting them, but it contradicted my understanding of reality: A Western anthropologist like Harner drinks a strong dose of ayahuasca with one people and gains access, in the middle of the twentieth century, to a world that informs the "mythological" concepts of other peoples and allows them to communicate with life-creating spirits of cosmic origin possibly linked to DNA. This seemed highly improbable to me, if not impossible. Still, I had decided to follow my approach through to its logical conclusion. So I casually penciled in the margin of Chaumeil’s text: "twins = DNA?"

[skip... skip... skip...]

On the basis of this connection, I could now conceive of a neurological mechanism for my hypothesis. The molecules of nicotine or dimethyltryptamine, contained in ayahuasca, activate their respective receptors, which set off a cascade of electrochemical reactions inside the neurons, leading to the stimulation of DNA and, more particularly, to its emission of visible waves, which shamans perceive as "hallucinations."

There, I thought, is the source of knowledge: DNA, living in water and emitting photons, like an aquatic dragon spitting fire.

CONCLUSION:  The ancient Egyptians clearly knew about DNA.

INTERPRETATION: If they knew about DNA, what else did they know?  It has long been accepted that their technology was advanced in astronomical and architectural sciences, but now, can we ignore their advanced knowledge of human physiology, and thus: medicine?

Leon's Essays on the Topic of Serpents

First Essay:  "Serpents: Enemies or Allies?"

Q:  How does one account for some religions having enemy serpents (the female being the bad and the male being the righteous); AND, for some religions having allied serpents in their mythology???

A:  I don't.  I could make and educated guess, but that's all it would be.

MY GUESS is that being ENEMIES actually symbolized the oppositeness of the serpents, one male and one female, and being ALLIES actually symbolized the union of the male haploid DNA strand & the female haploid DNA strand, which initiated the creation of life!

CONCLUSION

No matter what, I'm convinced that the serpents symbolized the union of the male haploid and female haploid DNA strands into one.  Why they had to be either enemies or allies is a mystery to me.

The only exception to the male-female "rule" would be Quetzalcoatl (and his MALE twin).
Here is a quotation from an article entitled "Quetzalcoatl" on the Wikipedia website:

The cult of the serpent in Mesoamerica is very old; there are representations of snakes with bird-like characteristics as old as the Olmec preclassic (1150-500 BC). The snake represents the earth and vegetation, but it was in Teotihuacan (around 150 BC) where the snake got the precious feathers of the quetzal, as seen in the Murals of the city. The most elaborate representations come from the old Quetzalcoatl Temple around 200 BC, which shows a rattlesnake with the long green feathers of the quetzal.

Quetzalcoatl depicted as a snake devouring a man, from the Codex Telleriano-Remensis.Teotihuacan was dedicated to Tlaloc, the water god, at the same time Quetzalcoatl, as a snake, was a representation of the fertility of the earth, and it was subordinate to Tlaloc. As the cult evolved, it became independent.

The part in this hue of greenish blue is very interesting to me, because it ties the serpent with FERTILITY.  Interestingly, another article from the Wikipedia website, entitled, "Snakes in Mythology", describes another tie-in to FERTILITY:

In some cultures snakes were fertility symbols, for example the Hopi people of North America performed an annual snake dance to celebrate the union of Snake Youth (a Sky spirit) and Snake Girl (an Underworld spirit) and to renew fertility of Nature.  During the dance, live snakes were handled and at the end of the dance the snakes were released into the fields to guarantee good crops.

WOW!  AND THE SERPENT-FERTILITY ASSOCIATION DOESN'T END THERE...

In the Hindu Religion, (especially in Southern India) intertwined serpents are the symbols of fertility; And, jewelry (such as is depicted below) is made to ensure the fertility of the wearer.

NOW, WE KNOW WHY.  DON'T WE?

I FIND THE FOLLOWING PICTURE INTERESTING BECAUSE THE SERPENT IS INTERTWINED THROUGHOUT THE 'TREE OF LIFE':

Second Essay - "The Single Serpent Vs. The Double Serpent"

Humans are composed of two 'serpent-like' things, which we now refer to as 'DNA strands'.  Each strand makes (composes) 23 chromosomes (see number 23 in numerology).  The 23rd chromosome is the "sex" or "gender" chromosome (this is highly significant, and you'll see why if you see my numerology page).

One serpent (strand) comes from a male human (via spermatozoa), and one serpent (strand) comes from a female human (via ova).  Humans are therefore in essence double-serpent beings.

Yet, there is a life-form, consisting of only one serpent.  It is called a virus.  Viruses are single DNA strands, that reproduce by infecting double serpent bodies and "stealing" their DNA, in order to replicate, causing havoc for the double-serpent beings, sometimes even killing the double serpent beings.

Now, being "armed" with this new perspective or insight, it is expedient to read from Genesis:

And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Serpents (snakes) are not all cursed, in fact some are liked very much.  But, all viruses are cursed.  And since the ancient Hebrews did not have a word for "virus", why not use "serpent" as a metaphor?

It is written, "dust shalt thou eat".  "Adam" means "dust" in the Hebrew language.  And since the humans were created of the dust of the earth, it means that the viruses would eat us:  HUMANS, i.e., the double-serpent beings!

It is written:  "...between thy seed and her seed".  Do viruses have "seed"?  Yes!  Like I mentioned above, viruses replicate (have seed) by stealing our DNA!

It is written:  [God speaking to the serpent] "...it [the seed of the woman] shall bruise thy head".  Do viruses have heads?  No.  So, this is clearly another metaphor.  The head is considered the most vital part of the body.  Without it, we die.  When we lose a limb, we most likely won't die (provided medical attention is given), but if we lose our head, no amount of medical attention will bring us back to life.  Thus, it means that the double-serpent beings would be able to KILL the single-serpent beings.

It is written:  [God speaking to the serpent] "...thou shalt bruise his [the seed of the woman]'s heel."  Unlike the head, the heel is not a vital part of the body.  Thus it means that the single-serpent beings would only be able to do minimal damage to humans.

It should be known that most viruses do not kill.  HIV doesn't kill, either.  But, what it does is it attacks the immune system so that the double-serpent beings cannot fight other bacteria and viruses that attack the body.  It would seem that the single-serpent beings have found our "Achilles' heel"!!!

Third Essay:  "The HINDU & GREEK Serpent-DNA Connection"

Hindu religion is the oldest religion still remaining on this planet, and it has an interesting perspective on Serpent Symbolism.

In Hindu mythology (and Jainism and Buddhism) the naga is a serpent-geni figure. As water gods, nagas inhabit the bottoms of rivers, lakes, and seas, in splendid, jewel-studded palaces ever alive with dancing and song. In temple architecture, nagas stand guard at the portals of shrines. In South India nagakals, stones decorated with a single serpent or an entwined serpent-pair, are set up as votive offerings by women desiring offspring.

In Indian mythology, the Nagas are a race of beings half-human and half-snake.

Source:  ProbertEncyclopaedia

Also, there is an interesting story in Greek mythology.  Evidently, Delphi (which means womb or navel) was the "center" of the world (and quite possibly the birthplace of human beings).  There was a huge dragon/serpent called "Python", which was the protectorate of "mother earth" (Gaia).  Python almost killed Apollo's mother, and as a result Apollo killed the Python.  [That's a very abbreviated version of the story, by the way].

The parallel between the Greek Python and the Norse Jormungand is fascinating, isn't it?!!!  (Jormungand was allegedly a single serpent sent by the gods to afflict humans).

It is also fascinating to note that Aesculapius (the father of medicine), was the son of Apollo.  And Hygieia (the goddess of health) and Panaceia (goddess of healing) were the daughters of Aesculapius.

What we have here are 3 generations of healers!

I suggest that the Python was a virus, which almost killed Apollo's mother.  He eradicated the virus through an adept use of medical science.  Then, he passed his skills on to his son.

It is also interesting to note that Aesculapius was reported to carry a staff with a carving of a serpent coiled around it, like this:

Could it be that the hidden meaning of the
Staff of Aesculapius
is triumph and/or dominion over the single serpent beings?

I think so.

This should be true symbol of modern medicine (not the double serpents entwined around a staff).

The American Medical Association uses the correct symbol, which looks very similar to the one on the left.

Many medical/health care institutions use the symbol to the left (Caduceus) which is the staff of Hermes, the Greek god who was the messenger to humans (for the other gods).

Hermes was associated with athletics, so it would seem appropriate to use the symbol in sports medicine, but there was really no association of the symbol to medicine in ancient times.

Now, compare these pictures of viruses to the Ancient Serpents:

This is the "Y" potato virus.

It could the two-headed serpent of many ancient religions/cultures.

This the "T4" virus.  Notice is has seven extremities.

It could the seven-headed Hydra of Greek mythology, which was eventually killed by Hercules and his nephew.

Interestingly, there is a seven-headed serpert (naga) of Buddhist lore.  It was forbidden to enter Buddhist temples, and statues thereof adorn the exterior of Buddhist temples, as protectors thereof.  Could it be that the statues served as a warning... that warning being that whoever enters here will be infected by a deadly virus?  And only special personages were allowed to enter such temples.  Could it be that those special personages had the antibodies to fight off said virus?  Things that make you go: "Hmmmm."  huh?

Also, interestingly, the seven or nine-headed Hydra was the protector of Hera's Golden Apple Tree.  Could it be that the fruit of the tree was infected with a deadly virus?

This is a Herpes virus.

It could be the "coiled serpent" of many ancient religions/cultures.

Check out this coiled serpent sculpture from ancient Mexico: (click here).

Virus pics from here.

FOURTH Essay:

"Lucifer, Behemoth, and Leviathan"

I gave my word at the beginning of this page that I would elucidate the significance of the 3 Biblical serpent symbols.  I keep my word.  And now that you have read this page in its entirety, it is more likely that you will believe me.

Lucifer-Serpent:  Symbol of his knowledge of DNA (much like the staff of Aesculapius was a symbol of his knowledge of DNA).

Behemoth-Land-Serpent:  Male gamete

Leviathan-Serpent-of-the-Abyss:  Female gamete

The hidden secret of how the two "monsters" were divided in one day is quite simply:  mitosis.

FIFTH Essay:

"My Dream about a Dragon and a Winding Staircase"

Several Years ago, I was writing a paper for my graduate studies at the University of Birmingham in the area of applied linguistics.  My friend, Stephen, was also writing a similar paper for the same course.  We got to talking about our assignments and the course contents.  During one such discussion, the question came up:  is the ability to learn and produce a language genetic or learned, i.e., is it hardware or software.  Stephen said that he knew the answer, but that he wouldn't tell me.  I'd have to figure it out for myself.  So, I went out to have a smoke, for I think better with the stimulation from the nicotine.  Five cigarettes later, I came back in and announced that I had solved the problem.

Before I write the answer, let take you through the though process in my mind (so far as I can remember).

I remember thinking that there must be some hardware, such as a mouth, a tongue, vocal cords, and so on.  This is provided by the genes (DNA).  Then, I remember thinking that hardware (such as that of a computer) is useless without instructions (software) to operate the hardware.  So, it dawned on me that language ability comes BOTH from hardware AND software.

BUT, I was faced with the problem of where the software came from.  This was the hard part.  I finally came to the conclusion that the DNA is a living, chemical program.  That means that the software and the hardware are one in the same.  They cannot be separated.

It's like energy and matter.  Energy and matter are actually the same thing.  The fact that we have two words to describe the same thing shows the duality of all substance in the known universe.  DNA is likewise dual in nature.  The hardware IS the software, AND the software IS the hardware.

Thus, learning to speak a language is analogous to "filling" in the blanks.  If there is no existing word or expression to fill in the blank, a new word or expression must be created.  The program has accounted for this contingency and humans seem to have a biological imperative to label all things, both concrete and abstract.

After I solved that problem, I began to ponder more deeply the ramifications of this new found knowledge.  It seemed that the genes might actually be intelligent... that they might be fully functioning organisms, living in communities that we call DNA strands.  The fact that they can replicate themselves provides some support for this notion.  Obviously, the more complex and populous the colony, the more complex the being created by the genes.  Then, I got the notion that genes might actually be considered our creators, i.e., our gods.  We, humans are merely organisms composed of zillions of minute organisms, who are our masters... our gods.

So, when religionists say that God lives within each of us, they are more literal than they perceive themselves to be.  When I read Narby's account (above), it reminded me of my previous ponderings, and I think that if we want to meet our makers, the way to do so, is NOT to die, but through the power of our own minds.  We must enter an altered state of consciousness and "listen" to the gods within us, and hear what they have to teach us about ourselves and our environment.

When we dream, we might be actually communicating with our own DNA.  Thus, by paying attention to our dreams, we might be able to gain insights about ourselves.  In fact, I now firmly believe this to be true.

I am reminded of a dream that I had once.  It is particularly relevant to this line of thought.

MY DREAM:  "Winding Staircase, White Dragon": 1994

I don't exactly remember how the dream starts out.  I think I was lost.  Then, a dragon flew toward me.  From where the dragon came, I was unaware.  The dragon was the shape of an Oriental dragon, and white, ...all white.  It had no wings, and yet it could fly.  The dragon spoke to me, but whether it was vocal or telepathic, I really cannot remember.  I'm thinking it was more gestural.  Meaning the dragon motioned for me to follow, which I did.  It led me up a winding staircase.  It seemed very steep, and very long.  The closer we came to the top, the narrower the staircase became.  When we came the the top, the dragon, being long and slender, easily squeezed through the small aperture.  I stopped.  I remember thinking, "This is too small and too difficult."  The dragon encouraged me to keep going.  Upon exiting the staircase, I stood in the heavens, with all the stars. [End]

Interpretation of this dream:

Clearly (and I have come to this conclusion only a decade after having had the dream)...   clearly the winding staircase represents a DNA strand , and the dragon represents the genetic code, which enables us humans to both literally and figuratively reach the stars.

See my DREAM INTERPRETATION page

I had totally forgotten about that dream until I read Narby's account above.  Now, I believe that I may have been in contact with my own DNA.

Wow!  This is truly amazing stuff.

P.S.

I call that dream (of mine) ', because of the similarities between my dream and Jacob's dream.  Also, our circumstances were very, very similar when we had our dreams.  In fact, after I had mine, I looked up Jacob's dream (never having read it before in my life), and was astonished at how similar the circumstance were that both led up to our dreams and which appeared in our dreams.

The Actual 'Jacob's Dream':

[12] And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
[13] And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
[14] And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
[15] And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
{From: Genesis 28: 12-15 KJV}

BUT, I ALSO call this dream my 'OSIRIS DREAM', for I found this [from the Pyramid Texts]:

"The gods who are in the sky are brought to you, the gods who are on earth assemble for you, they place their hands under you, they make a ladder for you that you may ascend on it into the sky, the doors of the sky are thrown open to you, the doors of the starry firmament are thrown open for you."
